Modest Medix Weight Management is a physician and registered dietician-led program that follows Obesity Canada Guidelines, focusing on the best weight using a value-based approach.

“Ideal weight” is what you typically aim for, but “Best Weight” is where your body ends up at and this is the weight that gives you the maximum health and functional benefits. For some, ideal weight is not realistically achievable. Focusing on the best weight, instead of the ideal weight, makes weight loss and maintenance more achievable and allows you to value the Best New You.

Modest Medix Weight Management program encompasses Lifestyle Therapy based on these four important pillars:

  • Genetic Testing
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
  • Behavioural Psychotherapy, and
  • Anti-Obesity Medications (AOM)

The research has proven that standard behavioural therapy (diet and exercise) causes up to 3% of weight loss, while medication(s) can expedite weight loss by more than 5% and helps maintain the lost weight. It drastically controls cravings and hunger and gives you a sense of early satiety. Because we only use Canada Health-approved medications and screen for eligibility, our medications are safe.

No. Various medical and mental factors may make a person ineligible for the medication.

Yes. Any medication you take may have side effects. However, most people adjust to medication within 14 days, and we will work with you to customize the dose that works well for you.

No. The anti-obesity medications are not addictive; you will never get used to them. However, you must understand that obesity is an imbalance of appetite and hunger hormones. These obesity medications help regulate these hormones, and you may or may not require long-term use for weight maintenance.

What makes our program unique is that we know that keeping your weight off is where the majority of work occurs, which takes time. After active weight loss, a plateau usually occurs after 3 months. We won’t let you go in such a vulnerable state, where the chances of weight regain is highest. This length is best for setting you up for success.

Modest Medix is designed to set you up for success. If you fully commit to the program, you can maintain your best weight even after the program ends.

When the program ends, you use the tools you’ve gained and the habits you’ve formed to continue maintaining your best weight and living your healthy lifestyle.

We aim to get you to your ‘Best Weight,’ which is about 5 to 10% less than your current body weight and ensure you keep the weight off for the long term. We do not believe in short-term – magic bullet, quick fix, beach body – weight loss. If this is what you want, this program is not for you. We focus on helping you achieve your best health and functional improvement.

If you are looking to cut down up to 50% of your medication use, fit into an MRI machine, climb a set of stairs without taking a break, travel the world after retirement, get on your knees to play with your grandchild or control your diabetes – then you are a good fit for this program. But if you are looking to fit into your wedding gown in 2 months or reach a bikini body by this summer, or move from size 14 to size 2 this year – then OH NO! – this is not for you!

Modest Medix provides one-on-one support using OCEs, nutrigenomics testing, meal planning software, educational portals, unlimited e-communication, and more – these services are not eligible for OHIP coverage. However, only the sessions with MD are OHIP covered.

Yes, it may. As every private health insurance is different, you’ll need to talk to a representative from your insurance company to determine its eligibility for reimbursemen

OCE stands for Obesity Care Educators. These are trained (not certified) health coaches who will be supporting you one-on-one throughout your weight loss and maintenance journey. They are not certified dietitians, nutritionists, psychotherapists or personal trainers.

Registered Dietitians (RDs) are certified, trained, and regulated food and nutrition experts. They are healthcare providers that help translate scientific, medical and nutritional evidence into practical information.

Yes. We offer Registered Dietitian (RD) supervised personalized and customizable weekly meal plans based on your goals, lifestyle, and habits.

OPTIFAST is a Health Canada-approved medical meal replacement shake that plays a role in calorie restriction for weight loss and maintenance. It makes losing and maintaining weight much easier and less restrictive. This helps you feel full and nutritious while consuming less.

Because Modest Medix is personalized to each person, how your genes affect your nutrition is front and centre in our approach. We need to know your genetics to find a solution that works for you.

As part of developing weight management habits, we empower you to develop a physical exercise routine that works with your lifestyle. We don’t expect you to run a marathon. As with every aspect of Modest Medix, the lifestyle has to be easy for you to maintain.

At Modest Medix, we emphasize mindfulness by using Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). When you accept what is out of your control and commit to your actions, you will unlock success in every area of your life.

No, you do not require a referral to join our program, but we highly encourage you to get one for continuity of care so that your progress can be shared with your family physician.
