WeightLoss

Our Pillars of Care

Modest Medix’s Weight Management program was created in Ontario to encompasses Lifestyle Therapy based on these four important pillars are:

  • Genetic Testing
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
  • Behavioural Psychotherapy
  • Anti-Obesity Medications (AOM)

Each pillar is fine tuned to your needs and values to best empower you to achieve and maintain your best weight.

Initial Assessment

Initial Assessment

Your physician (MD) will identify the causes of your weight gain, evaluate it’s effect on your overall health, and identify any obstacles in managing your weight. This is non-invasive and includes an online survey, which gathers information on your medical, social, physical activity and family history. The assessment also seeks insight into your lifestyle and values, and past attempts (both successful and unsuccessful) to lose weight and maintain weight loss. We also measure your mental health status. This helps us offer appropriate medical help for your weight loss journey.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

Our Registered Dietitian (RD) supervised program incorporates a validated dietary intake assessment that identifies whether you are currently eating according to your genetic makeup. We evaluate which foods or beverages you need to increase or decrease in your diet. We also offer flexible and adaptive weekly meal recommendations, using the EatLove meal planning app. You will get meal recommendations that match your specific lifestyle and food preferences. And you can swap out the recommendations when you don’t like a meal or when your food mood changes. You can even choose from healthy recommendations at restaurants nearby and get an adaptable grocery list

Medical Nutrition Therapy
Nutrigenomix

Genetic Testing

Over the past decade, there has been growing recognition of how genes influence our nutritional status, which directly impacts our health. For some people, eating more total energy from saturated fats can contribute to weight gain, while for others eating a high protein diet encourages fat loss; while for others there is no effect of either on weight. The Nutrigenomix Health & Wellness report not only gives you information about your unique results for 70 different genes but it also comes with personalized nutrition and exercise recommendations.

Behavioral Therapy

Our Obesity Care Educators (OCE) provide one-on-one weight loss coaching by using Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT). This approach promotes healthy behavioral patterns consistent with your values, while teaching mindfulness and acceptance skills.

We help identify motivators and sabotages of your weight journey and learn to control your internal and external cues to manage your high risk time. You will master the two key skills required to combat excess weight – Restraint and Resilience. You’ll notice life starts to get easy when you accept what is out of your control, and commit to actions and behaviours that improves your life (core message of ACT).

Anti Obesity Medication

Anti Obesity Medication

After the initial assessment, your MD will identify whether or not you are a candidate for pharmacotherapy, depending on your weight, history, phenotype and your struggles. There are four medication for weight loss that are safe and approved by Health Canada for long-term obesity management; Liraglutide 3.0 mg (Saxenda®), Naltrexone/Bupropion in a combination tablet (Contrave®), Orlistat (Xenical®) and Semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy®).

These medications have shown to be effective in reducing weight beyond which behaviour and lifestyle alone cannot do. It is also effective in the weight maintenance phase. They help to improve satiety, reduce cravings, control blood glucose level, manage diabetes, depression, anxiety and can also be used as adjuvant for smoking cessation.
